Heritage White Maize Seed Available
If you would like to grow some of Jonathan’s maize seed (see below) pleaseĀ reply to this blog and I will pass on Jonathan’s contact details to you.
I have a large jar of heritage white maize seed. Manning White. This old Australian variety is in urgent need of growing on. It grows into a huge plant – 10 foot high with three cobs of white maize. Anyone interested in trying to coax some germination out of the seeds and producing more? Jonathan Banks – Pialligo

I would be interested but I am also keen to grow “regular” yellow corn. Is there too much of a worry about cross pollination?

Kristen,
Corn is mostly wind pollinated but bees can play a role. Consequently, cross pollination is likely to be a problem if you are growing two varieties together. However, if you want to save seeds that are true to type it is relatively simple, although a little tedious, to hand pollinate your corn. For details see the Seed Savers Handbook by Michel and Jude Fanton.

We are just doing some germination testing now. Not looking good but we will know next week (12 Oct).

I had zero germination of the seed that I gratefully recieved.I planted in ideal conditions throughout the summer with no luck.
Any chance of getting some viable seed for next season?

After a dissappointing zero germination from my stock of white maize seed (stored too long, too hot), I got 30 seeds of Manning White from the Biloela maize seed collection/bank). Good germination this time and I now have a stand of 12′ high maize, in cob. Hoping to collect enough seed for anyone who wants it for next year.

How does one obtain seed from the Biloela maize seed collection? I have had a whole lot of Manning white and Hopi Blue seeds that have had a functionally zero germination rate (under laboratory conditions).
