Edible Nuts

December 3, 2009

Just wondering if anyone has grown edible nuts in Canberra, eg almonds or walnuts?

    Hi Monica,
I am interested in growing pistachio’s which are apparently very well suited to the ACT climate and are grown commercially in this region. However I was advised by a nursery that they cannot get them, which I thought a little strange. Would be interested to see what others have found out and whether there are any nurseries that stock them.

I have some hazelnuts that I planted 2 years and one year ago, but am yet to get to the nut stage of the experience.

I used to live in a house with a fantastic hazelnut tree in Dickson. I’ve also lived in various houses with walnuts over the years, but the cockatoos never left any for us.

    Hi
I bought three hazelnuts (2 x Ennis, 1 x pollinator Halls Giant) from Daley’s Nursery last year. I had my first one lonely hazelnut this summer. I am not sure what to do with it, but I was pleased that they ‘work’. I read that Woodbridge Nursery in Tasmania has a large selection and recommend planting quite a few different varieties to ensure pollination is successful.
