Apricot Grafting

July 2, 2010

Hi,
I have recently moved into a house with LOTS of plum trees. I am keen to try grafting some apricot scion wood onto one (to start with) and see how it goes. I have done a bit of research and am now trying to source some scion wood. Does anyone know where I can buy some, particularly locally? And can anyone recommend varieties that do well in Canberra, I am particularly interested in growing heritage varieties if possible.
Thanks for your help.
Christine

‘Trevatt’, ‘Moorpark’ and ‘Early Moorpark’ all do well in Canberra, accpting that a late frost can always kill some or all of the fruits. I will have ‘Trevatt’ prunings available this month, from a small tree.

‘The Canberra Gardener’ 8th edition also recommends ‘Titan’. I have no experience of this variety.

Please ‘phone 6257 1860 if you would like some material. I’d love some Plum in return, if you know what vars you have.

Tilton is recommended for cold climates–I haven’t been able to source it yet though (Yulca had them earlier in the year). You might have more luck given that you are grafting onto plum–the flowers might be high enough off the ground to avoid frost.

I would suggest asking for cuttings from anyone you meet who has an apricot tree that is doing well :)
