About the garden

The Kambah Community Garden has been operated by the Canberra Organic Growers Society since 2001. It is located at the corner of Springbett Street and O’Halloran Circuit, Kambah – adjacent to the Kambah Woolshed. It is set in a beautiful park landscape with a view of Mount Taylor.

We have on average around 25 gardeners allocated individual plots which they put to productive use growing food for themselves and their families. We apply ourselves to growing food all year round using sustainable organic gardening practices that build and continuously improve the quality of the soil and the environment to which we are entrusted. We emphasise collaboration within the garden with all plot holders sharing communal vegetable and herb garden cultivation, composting and general maintenance.

Keeping connected to the Canberra community is very important to us.  We welcome visitors and hold occasional open day events with food stalls and plant sales and have donated proceeds to Companion House and our Goodwill Garden program.  We grow fresh vegetables in our Sharing Garden for donation to community organisations and have made regular deliveries to Companion House for distribution to asylum-seekers.

Since 2013 we have sponsored asylum-seekers and refugees in organic gardening through our “Goodwill Garden” program in cooperation with the Australian Red Cross and Companion House. Support through advice and resources is provided including plants, seeds and soil amendments. The program is delivering real benefits for this highly vulnerable group of people, including improved food security.
