Community gardens

Sunflower

COGS operates 12 community gardens in the ACT region, at Charnwood, Cook, Cotter, Erindale, Holder, Kaleen, Kambah, Mitchell, Oaks Estate, O’Connor, Queanbeyan and Theodore.

Each garden has its own character and all use organic methods – in particular, no manufactured fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides are used.  A copy of the National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic Produce can be accessed here.

The community gardens are a great way to get your hands dirty, to grow your own fruit and vegetables for home consumption and to exchange tips and extra produce with fellow gardeners.

You must be a member of COGS to apply for a plot. Gardens are administered by a Convenor who has been elected from amongst the gardeners. Plot holders pay an annual levy (currently $2.00 per square metre) to cover the costs of the running the garden, including water and insurance.  For more information about how the gardens operate click here.  For details of the garden rules click here.

The COGS community gardens are supported by the ACT Government who administer licenses to operate on unused government land, and issued grants for garden establishment under the Healthy Cities program.
